Breaking the Silence on Domestic Violence

with guest speakers Nichole Schmidt and Tara Petito

Join us for an important community conversation about Gabby Petito’s story and the often-missed red flags of domestic violence.

Monday, March 2, 2026 | 6–8 pm | Schaible Auditorium or via Zoom

What warning signs are we missing — and how can recognizing them save lives?

Join the UAF Department of Justice and the Gabby Petito Foundation for an important community conversation featuring Nichole Schmidt and Tara Petito, mother and stepmother of Gabby Petito. Drawing from Gabby’s story and the nationally known case that followed her death, they will discuss how patterns of control and abuse can hide behind seemingly picture-perfect lives and what young people, families and bystanders can do to intervene early.

All are welcome to attend this important community conversation. High school and college students and their parents are especially encouraged to join, as the session provides practical tools for recognizing red flags, supporting friends and seeking help early.

Questions? Please contact Dr. Derik Stone at dmstone@alaska.edu.
