Ceramics artist Matt Hiller to lecture and give demonstrations

Ceramics artist Matt Hiller will give a public talk and live ceramics demonstrations April 1-2 at the ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥.

Hiller will share his creative process and techniques as he works directly with clay.

Hiller’s work draws from ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥â€™s landscapes and his off-the-grid lifestyle in the woods south of Talkeetna. 

The visiting artist lecture will take place Tuesday, April 1, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the BP Design Theater. The talk is free and open to the public and will also be available for those who cannot attend in person.

Hiller will host hands-on demonstrations in the UAF Ceramics Studio in the Fine Arts Complex (Art Wing, Room 415) on Wednesday and Thursday, April 1 and 2, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day, with a lunch break from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Attendees will be able to observe Hiller’s working methods and explore the processes behind his distinctive surfaces and forms.

Hiller studied studio art with a concentration in ceramics at the University of Wisconsin-Stout in Menomonie. After graduating, he traveled to ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ in 2013 for a seasonal job at a fish processing plant in Dillingham. The experience sparked a lasting connection to the state, and in 2016 he returned permanently. His travels eventually led him to a piece of land south of Talkeetna, where he built his home and studio by hand.

The event is hosted by the UAF Department of Art and the Student Ceramic Arts Guild, a student-run organization.
