Advancing the Arctic: Meet UAF’s Innovations, Disclosures, and Entrepreneurial Activities Awardees 2026

Each year the Office of Intellectual Property and Commercialization recognizes UAF and UAS researchers who have developed innovative approaches to research, teaching, and service transforming our institutions and ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ into the U.S. Arctic's entrepreneurial university. These top innovations advance industries, strengthen communities, and tackle the unique challenges of life in the 49th State.
Our 2026 Innovation Award winners look to our unique Arctic ecosystem for smarter, more resilient solutions, much like nature’s own design principles adapting directly to harsh environments to survive and thrive. The top disclosures demonstrate the highest quality research related to commercialization readiness, ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ impact, market size, team abilities in business and scientific acumen, and the strength of the intellectual property.
The 2026 awardees represent 6 distinct forms of innovations all connected by ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥n problems only ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥n innovators could solve.
- The Arctic Exhaust Hood was born from a direct challenge issued by a local Fairbanks business. The UAF Makerspace team designed, engineered, and manufactured a specialized exhaust hood that is now built and sold right here in town.
- Recombinant Protein Extraction Methods eliminate wasteful manufacturing steps and bypass multi-million-dollar equipment. This process accelerates life-saving biopharmaceutical research while allowing remote or smaller labs to participate in global drug discovery.
- Listening to ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ is a full-length planetarium film showcasing UAF’s cross-disciplinary research. Free for University of ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ facilities and available for commercial licensing worldwide, it turns Arctic science into immersive storytelling.
- ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥n kelp research replaces standard corn feedstocks with ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥n kelp to produce lactic acid, creating sustainable PLA plastic for 3D printing, and adding a use case to the state’s booming mariculture industry.
- Methods for Interpretable AI Bathymetry is a tool, research question, and business thesis that converts blurry satellite images of muddy water into precise ocean-floor maps, eliminating the need for costly survey vessels. It promises safer navigation, cheaper coastal planning, and better shoreline protection for ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ns and the nation.
- The Copper Pipe Pig is a simple tool that scrubs out stubborn debris in home heating systems that liquid cleaners miss. It keeps systems running reliably through harsh winters and smoke-heavy seasons, cutting energy waste and extending furnace lifespans.
All six winning disclosures target key ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥n economic sectors: building energy, science media, mariculture, and coastal security. Together, they prove that the extreme conditions of the 49th State are a catalyst for inventions that resonate far beyond our borders.
