Your Annual Costs at UAF
If you're an out-of-state student coming to UAF, you'll now be saving thousands of dollars each year with ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ Unlocked. Compared to other universities that offer WUE and discounted non-resident tuition rates, UAF offers an even more affordable, world-class education.
And remember, upon admission to UAF you'll also still be automatically considered for the merit-based Nanook Pledge Scholarship, worth up to $4,000/year for four years.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Who is eligible?
All students attending UAF beginning in fall 2027 will receive the ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ resident tuition rate, including students continuing from previous semesters.
-
I’m a current UAF student. Do I qualify?
Yes! If you’re a current UAF student paying at the non-resident or the WUE rate, you’ll automatically get the ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ resident tuition rate starting in the fall 2027 semester. You also don't need to apply for a non-resident tuition waiver for that semester.
If you're interested in applying for the non-resident tuition waiver for fall 2026, spring 2027 or summer 2027, check your eligibility at the residency information website.
-
Can I apply for the ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ Unlocked discount retroactively?
No. If you’re a current UAF student, your resident tuition rate will be applied beginning in fall 2027, but it cannot be applied retroactively to previous payments.
If you're interested in applying for the non-resident tuition waiver for fall 2026, spring 2027 or summer 2027, check your eligibility at the residency information website.
-
Do students have to establish ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ residency?
No. Residency is not required for tuition purposes under ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ Unlocked.
-
Is there an application?
No. Eligible students receive the resident tuition rate automatically when they register for classes.
-
Does this affect scholarships or financial aid?
You should continue to apply for scholarships and financial aid as usual. ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ Unlocked changes the tuition rate but does not replace other financial assistance opportunities. Scholarships that are based on residency, such as the Nanook Pledge scholarship, will be calculated at the ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ resident scholarship amounts. Scholarships like APS and UA Scholars Award will continue to use existing criteria.
-
Is ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ Unlocked different from Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE)?
Yes. Getting the resident rate through ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ Unlocked will save you more on tuition than WUE would. ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ Unlocked is only offered through institutions in the University of ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ system, giving all students the lowest tuition rate available — the resident rate. WUE is offered by many universities across different Western states, giving out-of-state students a discount that brings their tuition down to roughly 150% of the school's resident rate.
-
Does this apply to housing costs?
No. ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ Unlocked only affects tuition and fees.
-
Is this a scholarship?
No. Think of it more like a discount.
-
Do International students qualify for ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ Unlocked?
Yes!
-
I'm a UAF student but I'm taking classes from UAA or UAS. Will they be charged at non-resident rates?
UAA and UAS will both also be offering ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ Unlocked, meaning UAA and UAS classes will likely be charged at resident tuition rates, however each UA university may have different eligibility criteria and may not offer ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ Unlocked for all classes.
There may also be additional considerations you need to know when registering for UAA and UAS courses, for example, your UAF financial aid may be reduced to meet federal Course Program of Study (CPoS) requirements, and you may not be able to use military/veteran benefits for classes outside of UAF. Contact the Financial Aid Office if you have questions about how UAA or UAS classes may impact your aid.
-
Are all courses included in ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ Unlocked?
Yes. All UAF courses are included, including graduate courses and non-credit courses.
