SMA Classes
Large Ensembles
- SMA Concert Band- This large ensemble is open to all wind, brass & percussion students. Directed by Liesl Wietgrefe.
- SMA Orchestra- This large ensemble is open to all string players. Directed by Dr. Daniel Strawser.
- Musical Theatre- Sing and stage (movement) scenes from beloved musicals. All students are welcome. Directed by Dr. Jaunelle Celaire & Jenna Dreydoppel.
- SMA Symphony- This is an audition ensemble. Students will play alongside faculty and guest artists. Directed by TJ Hovest.
- Concert Choir- This is an audition ensemble. Students will sing classical choral literature alongside faculty and guest artists. Directed by Dr. Jaunelle Celaire & Jenna Dreydoppel.
- Jazz Band- This large ensemble is for students that want to explore Big Band Jazz music. Brass, Reeds, Percussion, & Piano students are welcome. Directed by TJ Hovest.
- Jazz Choir- Learn to sing jazz standards in tight harmony. Directed by Dr. Jaunelle Celaire & Jenna Dreydoppel.
- Show Choir- It's all about Glee! Combine singing and dancing for this fun choral experience. Directed by Dr. Jaunelle Celaire & Jenna Dreydoppel.
Chamber Music
- Chamber Music- Small Ensembles consisting of one player per part (ex. String Quartet). Chamber ensembles are offered for a variety of instruments with a variety of instructors.
- Instrumental Choirs & Ensembles- An ensemble of similar instruments (ex. Flute Choir, Guitar Ensemble).
- Rock Band- This ensemble explores popular music. Directed by Ryan Edwards & TJ Hovest.
Lessons
- Masterclass- Masterclasses are offered for a variety of disciplines. These classes will focus on improving solo repertoire in a group setting so students of different levels are learning from each other.
- Guitar Lessons- Students of all levels are welcome to improve their skills. Students must provide their own guitars. Taught by Ryan Edwards.
- Ukulele- Students of all levels are welcome to learn this instrument or improve their skills. Students must provide their own ukuleles. Taught by Ryan Edwards.
- Sectionals- Focus on the technique(s) needed to be successful in ensemble playing.
- Piano Lessons- Students of all levels from beginner to advanced will improve their skills on the piano. Taught by Jim Spontak, & Hannah Wagar.
Enrichment
- Intro to Music Theory- This class will provide campers with a basic introduction to note reading, treble and bass clef, and basic rhythms.
- Ear training- This class gives campers a look at how to understand what they are hearing when they listen to music and apply this basic knowledge to what they perform.
- Music History- This course will look at the composers, developments, and musicians that have gotten us to where we are now.
- Boomwhacker Choir- This course is the definition of a fun time. Boomwhackers are lightweight, hollow, color-coded, plastic tubes, tuned to a musical pitch by length. Students will work together to create a fun musical experience.
- World Beat- All are welcome to join in this practice in rhythm. Students will use rhythm to create songs organically.
- The World is My Instrument- An exploration percussion ensemble that utilizes the things we find all around us.
- Composition- typically for older campers; work with a composer and write new music with other campers.
- Vibe Check- a class for all music ability and interests; listening to music, discussion about what students hear and how to understand and appreciate the music they hear and perform not just in school, but on the radio and in film as well
- Recorder- class for all levels of ability - learning to play recorder or playing recorder if you already know some about playing the recorder
- Body Movement- for anyone interested in learning about choreography that goes along with performances
in show choir and musical theater, but open to anyone interested
*you do not have to be a vocalist or someone taking musical theater or show choir to take this class*
Audition Information
For the following instrumental ensembles - please submit an audition including items 1 and 2 below as well as filling out the audition form linked below:
- String orchestra
- Band
- Symphony
- Jazz Band
- Rock Band 1
***While no auditions are required for choral ensembles, if you want to sing in rock band, please submit an audition video***
Audition items:
1. Any major scale as many octaves as you can play it well. Play at a consistent tempo and rhythm.
2. Any video or clip of camper playing music - whether it is a solo piece or a selection from a large ensemble piece they are working on currently in school. Something that demonstrates their ability. Doesn’t need to be long. (15-30 seconds?). It can be a full piece if you wish but it does not need to be. Include the title of the music and the composer (or if it is an etude, the number of the etude book and what etude book it is from).
3. Fill out the audition info form.
So 3 parts to the audition video and then fill out the form. Please submit by May 15 at the latest.
