The Bering Strait Region Cooperative Extension serves the residents of Nome and 15 ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ Native villages in the surrounding 36,000 square miles in western ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥. The majority of the region's population is Inuit (Yupik, St. Lawrence Island Yupik, and Inupiaq) and resides in villages across the Seward Peninsula. Villages are entirely off the road system requiring commercial airline or private charter for the majority of travel, even between villages.
Cooperative Extension rents office space from UAF Northwest Campus in Nome. Outreach includes reindeer husbandry education, animal health and disease, summer camps for youth and adults in natural resources, and workshops in food preservation and traditional Native crafts (introduction to tanning skins into leather, leather stitching, and carving with antler, hoofs and bones).

This winter&/ces/districts/nome/8217;s record-cold temperatures in Interior ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ have highlighted the value of firewood as an efficient and cost-saving heat source. However, many who live here know the significant time and effort it takes for trees in the forest to become usable and dry firewood. This free presentation will explain how you can apply the practical results of a firewood drying study conducted by ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ forestry researchers Dr. Jessie Young-Robertson and Matt Robertson. Learn how to implement efficient strategies for harvesting and drying firewood to reduce firewood drying times by up to 6 months.

The 2026 ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ Master Gardener Conference, hosted by the UAF Cooperative Extension Service, will feature ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ experts covering topics from peonies to figs, native plants to poppies. Internationally renowned gardening expert Joe Lamp&/ces/districts/nome/39;l, the Joe behind joegardener, is the keynote speaker.&/ces/districts/nome/160;
The conference begins Friday, May 1 at 6 p.m. with registration at Harbor Mountain Brewing, 165 Shattuck Way, Juneau. Highlights from Lamp&/ces/districts/nome/39;l&/ces/districts/nome/39;s public television series "Growing a Greener World," will be shown.
Saturday, May 2, registration begins at 8 a.m. at Chapel by the Lake, 11042 Auke Lake Way, Juneau, with speakers throughout the day. For a full schedule, visit /ces/garden/mastergardeners/. Lamp&/ces/districts/nome/39;l will be at the Juneau Community Garden, 5669 Montana Creek Road at 4 p.m., followed by a meet and greet at 6 p.m.
