Public TV's joegardener to speak at ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ gardening conference

The 2026 ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ Master Gardener Conference, hosted by the UAF Cooperative Extension Service in Juneau, will feature ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ experts on such topics as peonies, figs, native plants and poppies. Internationally renowned gardening expert Joe Lamp'l, the Joe behind joegardener, is the keynote speaker.

Webinars highlight ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ Native Plant Month

The ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ Cooperative Extension Service, in collaboration with the ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ Native Plant Society, is hosting a series of free webinars to highlight native plants and animals and the challenges they face. All webinars will be from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesdays during May, which is ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ Native Plant Month.

Lumber grading training scheduled for Anchorage

The ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ Lumber Grading program will hold a free certification course in Anchorage from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 28. The program, part of the ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ Cooperative Extension Service, is designed to allow small and medium-scale sawmill operators to produce dimension lumber for home construction in ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥.

Workshop to teach pruning techniques for woody plants

Pruning is an important skill for anyone living in a yard with woody plants such as ornamental trees and shrubs. An in-person workshop will teach participants how to enhance a plant's shape, reduce branch breakage and repair pruning done by moose. The workshop is from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 21, at the Anchorage Museum Seed Lab, 111 W. 6th Ave., Anchorage.

Lumber drying, grading training offered in Craig, Klawock

A free two-day workshop is planned in Craig and Klawock for participants to learn about milling and drying lumber, with an opportunity to earn an ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ lumber grading certificate. Matt Labrenz, forest products specialist with the ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ Cooperative Extension Service, will lead the workshop April 22-23.

Palmer workshop focuses on food security through agriculture

A daylong workshop in Palmer will feature discussions and classes on how small-scale farming can strengthen ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥'s food system, providing ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ns with the skills to start growing. The Food Security through Agriculture workshop is from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday, April 18, at the ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ State Fairgrounds and Rebarchek Farm, 2075 Glenn Highway, Palmer.

Postponed: Wild edibles focus of Juneau workshop

A workshop in Juneau will take participants on a walk through the woods to sustainably gather wild, edible plants and prepare them for a meal. Sarah Lewis, a ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ Cooperative Extension Service professor, and Southeast ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ foraging expert and author Corinne Conlon will lead the workshop, from 1-7 p.m. on Saturday, April 25.

Pesticide applicator training classes set for April

A three-day certified pesticide applicator training workshop is scheduled for April 21-23. The workshops are led by the ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ Cooperative Extension Service via Zoom and are available statewide. Each day, the class will meet from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Webinar focuses on ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥'s growing mariculture industry

In a free online presentation at noon on Wednesday, April 15, Melissa "Missy" Good with the ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ Sea Grant will review how ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥'s mariculture industry strengthens coastal economies and food security. The webinar is hosted by the UAF Cooperative Extension Service.

Food safety, preservation workshops planned for Kenai Peninsula
