Southeast ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ is defined by the waters, islands, resources and people of the Inside Passage. Juneau is the state capital and largest city in the region, which includes 35 communities with just over 73,500 people, about a fifth of whom are Indigenous Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian. Tourism, mining and fisheries are the major industries.

Outreach includes programs in agriculture and horticulture; health, home and family development; nutrition and integrated pest management.

Join UAF Cooperative Extension Professor Sarah Lewis and Southeast ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ foraging expert and author Corinne Conlon to sustainably gather local, wild, edible plants and learn about their uses in cooking.

Foraging Walk: 1-3 p.m., Auke Recreation Area wild areas (expect moderate wilderness hiking up and down slopes, and wet, cold conditions).

Wild Kitchen Time: 4-7 p.m., Chapel by the Lake, 11024 Auke Lake Way, Juneau.

Wild edibles we&/ces/districts/juneau/8217;ll likely find and cook with: nettles, fireweed shoots, devil&/ces/districts/juneau/8217;s club shoots, violets, and other emerging buds and shoots. We&/ces/districts/juneau/39;ll make several dishes for dinner and enjoy them together.

City and Borough of Juneau and Juneau School District employees with low bone density (osteopenia or osteoporosis) or who are interested in learning how bone and muscle strength can benefit their long-term health can apply for a Better Bones and Balance fitness program.

The class, which runs from April 7-30, consists of a mix of circuit-style training, independent workouts and group fitness activities. Workouts can be adapted for low- and high-fitness individuals. Nutrition for bone health and the broader health benefits of strength training and cardiovascular health will be discussed. The Juneau office of the ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ Cooperative Extension Service is offering the class.&/ces/districts/juneau/160;

This winter&/ces/districts/juneau/8217;s record-cold temperatures in Interior ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ have highlighted the value of firewood as an efficient and cost-saving heat source. However, many who live here know the significant time and effort it takes for trees in the forest to become usable and dry firewood. This free presentation will explain how you can apply the practical results of a firewood drying study conducted by ÀÖ»¢Ö±²¥ forestry researchers Dr. Jessie Young-Robertson and Matt Robertson. Learn how to implement efficient strategies for harvesting and drying firewood to reduce firewood drying times by up to 6 months.
